Why willpower doesn’t work

You’ve probably tried the “normal” solutions. Telling yourself you’ll try harder, wake up earlier, be more productive, push through, be more disciplined. It might have worked for a day… maybe even a week. But then, slowly, you found yourself right back where you started. What I’ve learnt is that willpower tries to override a nervous system that’s already depleted. It focuses on the symptom rather than changing the conditions that created the problem in the first place. It’s like turning your heating up full blast while all the doors and windows are still open.

When your energy is low, forcing yourself to “be more motivated” doesn’t fix anything. It just adds more strain. More pressure. More exhaustion. And over time, that’s what leads to stress and burnout. Real change doesn’t come from pushing harder. It comes from understanding what’s actually throwing your system off, and then working with that instead of fighting against it.

Because your brain isn’t just about mindset or positive thinking. It’s made up of interconnected systems that influence everything - your mood, your motivation, your energy, your patience, how you show up in your relationships, even how well you sleep. And at the centre of that are a few key chemicals.

Dopamine is your motivation and reward chemical. When it’s low, even starting feels difficult and things you usually enjoy can feel flat.

Cortisol is your stress response. It’s designed to help you deal with challenges, but when it stays elevated, your system never really switches off.

Serotonin is your mood and resilience chemical. When it’s low, everything can feel a bit heavier, a bit harder, a bit “meh”.

When these are out of balance, it’s no wonder things feel difficult but small, intentional changes in how you live and work can start to shift your chemistry. And when your chemistry shifts, so does how you feel which means you don’t need to force your way forward. You don’t need more discipline. You don’t need to push harder. You just need to understand what’s going on and create the conditions that support you properly.

Because clarity doesn’t come from pressure, it comes from working with yourself, not against yourself.
